The Incredible Scofield and His Book by Joseph M. Canfield

Joseph M. Canfield’s thorough, critical review of the legends and historical inaccuracies about Cyrus Scofield and the Scofield Reference Bible (and later editions revised by others) included extensive documentation relating to Scofield’s divorce of his first wife and of his failure to provide for his daughters. Canfield observed that you will not find any Scofield Reference Notes (1917 Edition) for 1 Timothy 5:8 and for many other verses relating to Scofield’s personal failings. Even worse, Scofield’s notes have promoted dispensationalism and other false teachings used to promote endless wars and the destruction of Christianity.

As a boy, I bought a Scofield Reference Bible because of its cross-referencing system. This system meant that I did not need to carry with me a Bible and a concordance. Luckily, I ignored Scofield’s notes and Ussher dates as being only opinons. Unfortunately, many Christians assumed that anything appearing in a Bible was sacred.

Scofield’s Qualifications

Scofield claimed to have a Doctor of Divinity degree and used the title Dr. Scofield. However, researchers have been unable to verify any studies or any degree. Scofield did not study the languages of the Bible. Born in Michigan, Scofield moved to Tennessee, where he served in the Confederate Army during part of the Civil War (War Between the States). In Kansas, he was a lawyer, a member of the Kansas House of Representatives, and a United States Attorney for Kansas. He spent time in jail for fraud.

Divorce

Scofield’s first wife came from a prosperous fur-trading family. He spent long periods of time away from his wife and daughters. Later, when he decided to enter the ministry, he divorced his Catholic wife and married a woman who attended his church.

Free from the Law by Grace

Instead of advocating a straight and narrow path of moral behavior, Scofield promoted antinomianism. Since people can never be perfect, the saved are free from the law by grace.

Failing Churches

Scofield claimed that Christian churches were failing in a decaying world. However, if there will be a rapture soon, why bother to improve?

Avoid Politics

Even though Scofield had held political positions, he advocated that Christians stay out of politics because the world cannot be converted. While he supported having missionaries, his advocacy was based upon evangelizing, not on ultimate conversions. Powerful political elites will appreciate not having to worry about Christians who stay out of politics.

Rapture

Scofield must have been surprised on his death bed because he claimed to believe in the rapture. He wrote extensive notes about Matthew 13 and the Parable of the Wheat and Tares (weeds, used to refer to wicked people). In this parable, Jesus spoke of burning the tares first and placing the wheat in the barn. Scofield twisted this to meaning set aside the tares for later destruction and take the wheat first. Hal Lindsey and others have sold millions of books based upon Scofield’s notes and other proponents of dispensationalism, such as: The Late Great Planet Earth, The Rapture, and The Everlasting Hatred: The Roots of Jihad.

Millennial Kingdom on Earth

While Scofield promoted the Postponed Kingdom theory, he provided few notes to the Bible to support the theory. Jesus disappointed those who wanted a Messiah to rule the world. Canfield critiqued the theory that Jesus will return to impose political or theocratic rule for 1,000 years and yet many will choose not to believe during that period.

Scofield’s Expensive Lifestyle

Canfield documented Scofield’s earnings as a minister and his royalties. Scofield could not have made trips to Europe and have lived in several homes on his income. Scofield was a member of The Lotos Club in New York City. Neither his wealth nor his literary achievements were similar to those of other members of this expensive club. Hopefully, future researchers will be able to discover the sources and the agenda of those who promoted the works of Scofield.

Peace or Endless Wars?

Scofield’s views ranged from having a world government and world police to Armageddon prospects for endless wars.

Canfield provided detailed explanations of the errors and omissions in an earlier book about Scofield (The Life Story of C. I. Scofield by Charles Gallaudet Trumbull), a thesis, and in articles. Charles Carlson has posted more recent critiques of Scofield and of the Scofield Reference Bible. After comparing these sources, readers will be able to decide whether Scofield rightly divided the word of truth:

Intelligent Christian’s Guide to Judaism

Michael Hoffman’s 1,102-page book, Judaism Discovered: From Its Own Texts--A Study of the Anti-Biblical Religion of Racism, Self-Worship, Superstition and Deceit, published by Independent History and Research (revisionisthistory.org) is an outstanding guide for intelligent Christians to understand the relationship between Orthodox Judaism and major religious, political, and economic issues, such as: Judeo-Christian values myth, dispensationalism, dual covenant theology, supersessionism, communism, Zionism, Christian Zionism, neo-conservatives (neo-Trotskyites), and liberation theology.

Many Christians (Protestant, Catholic, and Orthodox) do not even realize that the Bibles they use do not contain the same number of books or sequence of books in the Old and New Testaments as the Bibles used by other Christians. Even worse, many Christians believe that the Old Testament contains everything they need to know about Judaism. Hoffman’s masterpiece provides Christians with detailed explanations of the Oral Torah, such as the Babylonian Talmud, accepted by Orthodox Judaism. Christians who choose to remain ignorant of Judaism need to review the historical consequences of Christian ignorance, including: Sever Plocker’s article “Stalin’s Jews” (posted at ynetnews.com) and Christopher Jon Bjerknes’ free book online The Jewish Genocide of Armenian Christians.

The Soviet Union exploited Christian ignorance of Christian doctrines by promoting liberation theology, creating Christian or peace organizations (Christian Peace Conference), and by sending representatives to the World Council of Churches meetings. In spite of sanitized translations of the Old Testament in Christian Bibles, such as using servant instead of slave, intelligent readers of the Old Testament understand that there is nothing sacred about many of the values expressed in the Old Testament, including the Jewish practice of murdering every man, woman, and child when they invaded the lands of others. An atheist Web site, SkepticsAnnotedBible.com, contains detailed annotations of the Bible, Koran, and of the Book of Mormon. It is a sad commentary on Christians and Muslims when atheists understand their sacred books better than most Christians and Muslims do.

What is a Gentile? I am amazed at how many Christians cannot answer this question. They have read in the Old Testament about Adam and Eve and assume that they have descended from Adam and Eve. If this were true, then we are all Jews. Orthodox Jews do not believe this. Jesus preached to Jews and was crucified at the request of Jewish leaders for doing so. While New Testament Christians understand that the new covenant replaced old covenants, Christian Zionists have promoted dual covenants and dispensationalism. An example of a book covering the issues related to supersessionism is Michael J. Vlach’s The Church As a Replacement of Israel: An Analysis of Supersessionism. The Apostle Paul shocked many early Christians by preaching to Gentiles and by not requiring circumcision for Gentiles in order to become Christians. Christians who read Hoffman’s book will understand why.

On March 2, 2006, The Jerusalem Post had to report that John Hagee and Jerry Falwell denied the claim reported earlier that they believed that Jews could go to heaven without accepting Jesus. To understand those who call themselves Christian Zionists, read Shlomo Aviner’s book, Moses Hess: Prophet of Communism and Zionism. Moses Hess worked with Karl Marx on drafts of The Communist Manifesto. Early communists called Moses Hess the “Communist Rabbi”. Moses Hess’ 1862 book, Rome and Jerusalem, outlined a communist strategy to destroy Christian culture in Europe while providing a refuge for Jewish communists in Palestine. Moses Hess is buried in Israel.

If you accept the Orthodox Jewish beliefs about the distinction between Jews and Gentiles, then it would not be possible to convert to Orthodox Judaism. Amazingly, many of those who claim to be Jews today have pagan ancestors who converted to Judaism (Shlomo Sand and Yael Lotan’s book: The Invention of the Jewish People). The combination of the chutzpah of the descendants of King Bulan’s pagans of Eastern Europe who call their opponents anti-Semites plus the stupidity and dishonesty of the Christian Zionists has served as the basis for endless wars. As documented by David Chagall, in his book Target: Special Victims of the Holocaust, Nazi Germany did not target Semitic (Sephardic) Jews.

Michael Hoffman and Moshe Lieberman’s book, The Israeli Holocaust Against the Palestinians, documented war crimes against the Palestinians made possible by America’s political leaders and media portraying the Palestinians as less than human. As noted by atheists, such as at EvilBible.com, the Bible contains many claims by Jews that God told the Jews to murder every man, woman, and child in lands the Jews wanted for themselves: “The so called ‘God’ of the Bible makes Osama Bin Laden look like a Boy Scout.” As documented by Michael Hoffman, the Talmud is even worse (see also: TalmudBlasphemy.com).

In a desperate attempt to steal Palestine from the Palestinians, the debate has turned to searches for lost tribes and to DNA, inspired by books such as: Jon Entine’s Abraham’s Children: Race, Identity, and the DNA of the Chosen People and Yaakov Kleiman’s DNA and Tradition: The Genetic Link to the Ancient Hebrews. For those who want to support your claims, submit your DNA to 23andMe.com and post your maternal and paternal haplogroup results. As noted at 23andMe.com: “all humans are more than 99% similar to each other genetically”. Anyone who accepts the Old Testament accounts of Jews murdering every man, woman, and child—except for Gentile virgins taken as Jewish wives—will have problems pursuing genetic claims.
